NEW DELHI: If you are turning 18 or have never registered to vote, now is a good time to get your Voter ID card. The card is officially called the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) and is issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI). It lets you vote, and it also works as a proof of identity. Registration is free, and most of the process can be done online.

Who can apply

Any Indian citizen aged 18 or above can apply. The ECI now has four qualifying dates each year: January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. Young people no longer have to wait for a single date to register. Those who are 17 can also apply in advance.

Step 1: Choose how to apply

You can apply online through the Voters’ Services Portal (voters.eci.gov.in) or the Voter Helpline App. If you prefer, you can submit a paper Form 6 to your Booth Level Officer (BLO). Form 6 is meant for new voters.

Step 2: Create an account
For online applications, sign up with your mobile number and verify it with the OTP you receive. After logging in, select the new voter registration option (Form 6).

Step 3: Fill in your details
Enter your name, date of birth, gender, address and constituency. Check everything carefully before moving on. A small spelling mistake or wrong address can delay your application.

Step 4: Upload your documents
Keep these ready:

  • A recent, clear photograph
  • Proof of age, such as a birth certificate, passport or Class 10 certificate
  • Proof of address, such as an electricity bill, bank passbook or ration card

The list of accepted documents can change, so check the portal for the latest version and file-size limits.

Step 5: Submit and save your reference number
Once you submit the form, you will get a reference number. Keep it safe, because you can use it to track your application status on the portal.

Step 6: Verification
A BLO may call or visit your home to confirm your details. Keep your phone reachable and make sure your address is easy to find.

Step 7: Get your card
After approval, your name is added to the electoral roll. You can then download your digital card, the e-EPIC, from the portal. The physical card is sent to your address by post.

Having a card is not enough
Remember that your name must appear on the electoral roll to vote. After registering, check the roll on the official portal or the Voter Helpline App to confirm your name is there.

Is Aadhaar compulsory?
No. Sharing your Aadhaar number is voluntary, and the Election Commission has said an application cannot be rejected only because someone does not provide it.

Lost your card or need a correction?
You can generally use Form 8 to correct details such as your name or address, or to request a replacement card. If you move to a new constituency, you may need to apply again with Form 6 at your new address. Indian citizens living abroad can register using Form 6A.
