NEW DELHI: Say you’ve bought a bike. It’s shiny, it’s yours, and you can’t wait to take it out. Then someone asks the one question that kills the mood: “Do you have a license?” Don’t panic. Getting one is easier than it sounds, and you can begin the process today, from your phone.

Everything happens on the government’s Sarathi website (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in). There are two stages. You get a learner’s license first, and the permanent one comes later. A quick word of advice: only use the official site. Fake ones look similar, and some of them will accept extra money from you with enthusiasm.

Ready? Here we go.

Step 1: Check your age

If you want a bike with gears, you must be 18. If you’re 16, you can ride a gearless vehicle up to 50cc, but a parent or guardian has to say yes.

  • 18 and above: geared motorcycles
  • 16 with guardian consent: gearless vehicles up to 50cc

Step 2: Gather your papers

Do this before you even open the website. It saves a lot of running around. You’ll need:

  • Proof of age, like a birth certificate or school certificate
  • Proof of address, like an Aadhaar card
  • A few passport-size photos

Some states also ask for a medical form, so find out early.

Step 3: Open the Sarathi website

Type the address yourself. Ignore ads and forwarded links, especially ones promising a license “in one day.” Those are not real.

Step 4: Fill in the learner’s license form

  • Click “Driving License Related Services”
  • Pick your state
  • Choose “Apply for Learner License”
  • Fill in the form

Slow down here. One wrong spelling can hold up your application for days. Make sure your name and date of birth match your documents, and pick the right vehicle category.

Step 5: Upload your documents and pay

Add your photo and papers where indicated on the form, then pay online. The site shows the exact fee, which changes from state to state, so you’ll know before you pay.

Step 6: Book the online test and pass it

Pick a date. The test covers only traffic rules and road signs, so there’s no need to be scared. A few evenings with the signs are usually enough.

  • Learn the shapes and colors of road signs
  • Read about right of way, speed limits and lane rules
  • Try the sample questions if the website has them

Pass it, and your learner’s license is on its way.

Step 7: Practice for at least 30 days

This license lasts six months. During that time, don’t ride alone. Take someone with you who already has a license. And wear a helmet every time, even for a two-minute ride.

  • Start in an empty lane or open ground, then try quiet roads
  • Get comfortable with turning, braking and stopping
  • Use your mirrors and indicators until using them feels natural
  • Practice the figure of eight, because many RTOs ask for it

Step 8: Apply for the permanent license

You can’t do this on day one. You must hold your learner’s license for at least 30 days. But don’t wait forever either. You have 180 days to pass the riding test, and after those 180 days the learner’s license runs out.

When you’re ready:

  • Go back to the website
  • Click “Apply for Driving License”
  • Enter your learner’s license details
  • Book a test slot
  • Pay the fee online

Step 9: Prepare for test day

You’ll go to the RTO, the Regional Transport Office, with your papers and your bike. Pack your bag the night before, so the morning isn’t a mad search for documents:

  • Your learner’s license
  • Your slot confirmation
  • Your original documents and a set of copies
  • Your bike, in good working condition
  • A helmet

Step 10: Pass the riding test

An officer watches you ride on a track. They look at your balance, your control and how you handle the road. Many RTOs ask for a figure of eight. Don’t rush. Nobody gets extra marks for speed.

A few small habits help:

  • Check your mirrors before you move
  • Use your indicator before every turn
  • Keep both hands steady on the handlebar
  • If you make a mistake, stay calm and keep going

Pass, and your license will be issued.

What will it cost?

There isn’t one fixed price. Fees depend on your state, and a smart card may cost a little more. The website shows the amount as you apply.

The short version

  1. Check your age
  2. Collect your papers
  3. Apply for the learner’s license on Sarathi
  4. Pass the online test
  5. Practice for a least of 30 days while ensuring safety.
  6. Book your riding test and pass it within six months

That’s the whole thing. Getting the license takes time. But once you have it, you can ride without restrictions. You may be asked to show it.
