Police say the man took his wife to a river for an “outing” and pushed her in, even though he knew she could not swim.
Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh: Police in Chhattisgarh have arrested a man after his wife drowned in a river. They say he pushed her into the water on purpose. The man allegedly told police he was upset because the couple often argued over small things.
Who Is Involved
Police have named the man as Mayur Meshram, who is also called Rinku. His wife was Neelam. They lived in Rajnandgaon district in the state of Chhattisgarh.
What Happened
According to police, the event took place on the evening of October 21. Meshram told his wife that they were going out for an outing, which is a short trip for fun or fresh air. Police say this was only an excuse.
The two went to the Mohara river, near a small bridge, at around 7 pm. The area falls under the Basantpur police station.
Police say the couple began arguing again while they were by the river. During this fight, Meshram allegedly pushed Neelam into the water. Police say he knew she could not swim. Neelam drowned, which means she could not breathe under the water and died.
Why Police Say He Did It
Police say Meshram was frustrated because he and his wife often argued about minor issues. In other words, the fights were usually about small, everyday matters and not about anything big.
Police have not said anything beyond this. Whatever the reason, hurting another person is a serious crime in India. Arguments between family members should never end in violence.
How the Police Found Out
After the incident, Meshram allegedly told his brother-in-law, who is the brother of his wife, about what had happened. The family then made a complaint to the police.
Based on this complaint, the Basantpur police started a murder case. They used a rule called Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, or BNS. The BNS is India’s main book of criminal laws, and this section deals with murder.
The Arrest

Police found Meshram and arrested him on October 22, only one day after the incident. When officers questioned him, he allegedly admitted to what he had done, police said.
After that, he was taken to a court. The court sent him to Rajnandgaon district jail, where he will stay for now.
