CHICAGO / AURORA — United States law enforcement authorities have arrested and charged a 19-year-old man from Palatine, Illinois, for allegedly plotting a racially motivated mass shooting targeting a Hindu place of worship in the Chicago suburb of Aurora.

The suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis, was taken into custody on the evening of Sunday, October 11, after an acquaintance reported receiving violent messages, photos of tactical firearms, and a white supremacist manifesto targeting people of Indian descent.

Paporakis appeared before the Cook County Third Municipal District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows, where a judge ordered him held in custody without bond pending his next court hearing on October 30.

The Tip-Off and Gun Malfunction

The investigation began when the Mount Prospect and Palatine Police Departments received an urgent report from an individual who had received alarming digital messages from Paporakis, a cashier at a local Taco Bell.

According to police filings, Paporakis shared photos of a rifle, ammunition magazines, body armor, and tactical gear, alongside a manifesto titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora shooter’s manifesto).” Investigators revealed that the document contained explicit neo-Nazi and white supremacist rhetoric, detailing intent to commit violence against South Asian individuals, particularly those of Indian heritage.

Co-workers told investigators that Paporakis had previously remarked that Sunday would be “a special day.” Later that morning, he allegedly called a colleague stating that his weapon had jammed and that he fled the scene immediately without being detected. Officers arrested him outside his home on Sunday evening as he attempted to leave.

Arsenal Seized and Federal Charges

A search of Paporakis’ residence yielded a significant cache of tactical gear and weapons:

  • A short-barreled rifle (with a barrel measuring under 16 inches).
  • Multiple loaded magazines and hundreds of rounds of live ammunition.
  • A tactical vest equipped with ballistic body armor plates.
  • Insignia and patches associated with white supremacist organizations.

Paporakis has been charged with one count of Making a Terrorist Threat (a Class X felony) and one count of Unlawful Possession of Weapons. The Palatine Police Department confirmed it is working in close coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Chicago field office to determine whether additional federal hate crime charges will be filed.

Temple Tightens Security Amid Festive Season

While authorities have not named the exact site under investigation, the threat was centered in southwest suburban Aurora, home to the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple—one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in the Midwest.

The temple administration immediately deployed armed security personnel on-site between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM and coordinated defensive measures with the Aurora Police Department. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) praised law enforcement for preventing a tragedy, urging devotees across the country to maintain situational awareness during Navaratri celebrations.

Indian Consulate Welcomes Swift Action

The Consulate General of India in Chicago released a statement commending local and federal law enforcement agencies for preventing loss of life.

“The Consulate is aware of reports concerning a foiled attempt to target a place of worship in Aurora, Illinois. We appreciate the timely action by law enforcement authorities. We are in touch with members of the Indian diaspora and are closely monitoring developments,” the mission stated.
