NEW DELHI: You’ve found a cheap flight. Or maybe a college abroad has said yes. Either way, there’s one thing missing: a passport. The thought of government forms can feel heavy, but this one is easier than you’d expect. Almost everything happens online, and you visit a centre only once.

Quick tip before you begin. Stick to the official website, passportindia.gov.in. Some people on WhatsApp promise a “fast passport” for a fee. Don’t fall for it.

Step 1: Make your account

Open passportindia.gov.in and click “Register Now.” Fill in your basic details and set a login. If you like doing things on your phone, the mPassport Seva app also works for applying, booking and tracking.

Step 2: Pick the right option

Log in and choose “Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport.” First passport? Then it’s “Fresh.”

Step 3: Fill in the form

Go slowly. Your name and date of birth should match your documents letter for letter. A small mismatch can slow things down later. Once you submit, you’ll get an application reference number.

Step 4: Sort out your documents

You’ll take your originals to the appointment. Not sure what to carry? The portal’s Document Advisor will tell you. Most people need:

  • Proof of address, such as an Aadhaar card
  • Proof of date of birth, such as a school certificate (a matriculation certificate is common)
  • Photocopies of your documents
  • Passport-size photos, if the centre asks

Step 5: Pay online

You can’t book a slot until you pay, so do this next. Cards, net banking and UPI all work. The fee was ₹1,500 for a normal passport and ₹3,500 for Tatkal. Fees can change, so look at the amount on the portal.

Step 6: Book your slot

Click “Pay and Schedule Appointment.” Choose a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) near you. Then pick a date and time. Slots go quickly, so don’t delay. You can check availability on the homepage without logging in. Also remember that you have 90 days to visit the centre once the online steps are done.

Step 7: Go to the centre

Arrive on your date with your original documents. Staff will check your papers, take your photograph and record your fingerprints. You don’t need a printed receipt anymore, because the appointment SMS is enough.

Step 8: Wait for verification and delivery

After your visit, the police may verify your address. When everything clears, your passport is printed and delivered to your home.

How long does it take?

A normal passport usually takes 30 to 45 days. Tatkal is quicker, but timing varies, so ask at the centre.

Need to change your date?

You can reschedule or cancel online, but only twice within one year of your first appointment date. Choose your slot with care.

Where is my application?

Open the portal, click “Track Passport Application,” and enter your file number and date of birth. You’ll see the latest status.

Things that trip people up

  • A fake website or a WhatsApp “agent”
  • A name that doesn’t match your documents
  • Missing the 90-day window
  • Leaving the originals at home

In short

  1. Register on passportindia.gov.in
  2. Log in and choose “Fresh Passport”
  3. Fill in the form and submit it
  4. Pay the fee online
  5. Book a slot at a PSK or POPSK
  6. Visit with your original documents
  7. Wait for police verification and delivery

That’s all there is to it. A bit of patience, and soon you’ll be holding the document that gets you across the world.
