NEW DELHI: Four people died and two were injured in a fire at a shoe factory in Mangolpuri Industrial Area, Phase 1, on Friday night, police said.
The fire broke out around 9:30 pm. The Delhi Fire Service got the call at 9:32 and sent 20 fire tenders. Police reached about the same time, and both teams began the rescue together.
Six people were found inside, all unconscious. They were carried out and taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri, where four were declared dead. The other two are still being treated.
“Our teams reached the spot soon after getting the information, and the rescue was done together with the Fire Department,” said Vikram Singh, DCP of the Outer District.
Firefighters needed hours to bring the blaze under control.
Officials haven’t said what started the fire or why all six were unconscious when found. Smoke can knock a person out within minutes, but police haven’t said if that happened here. The dead haven’t been named, and it’s unclear how many people were inside the factory.
Police and fire officials are expected to look into the cause and whether the factory followed safety rules. The two injured remain in hospital.
