The popular game was banned, then delayed again and again. Now fans finally have a date.

Mumbai: Good news for gamers! Free Fire India will be ready to download on October 28, 2026. Garena, the company that makes the game, has shared the news. Many fans have been waiting for more than three years.

The Big Announcement

Garena posted a short and happy message for players: “Free Fire India is here!” The game is expected to come to both Android phones and iPhones.

On October 26, a day before the news, Garena changed the names of its YouTube channels to “Free Fire India Official” and “Free Fire India Esports.” Fans noticed right away and guessed that something big was coming. Some well-known game creators also gave hints about the date before the official news came out.

Why Was the Game Stopped?

To understand the story, we have to go back to the beginning. Free Fire was one of the most loved mobile games in India. In 2021, it was one of the top gaming apps in the country for money spent by players.

But in February 2022, the Indian government banned Free Fire. It also banned 53 other apps. The government was worried that some apps linked to China might be sending users’ private information outside India. This kind of private information is called data, and the government wanted to keep Indian people’s data safe.

The ban was also a big problem for the company that owns Garena. This company, called Sea Group, reportedly lost about $16 billion in value after the ban. That is a huge amount of money. For players in India, the game simply disappeared, and millions of fans could not play any more.

The First Plan to Bring It Back

In August 2023, Garena had good news. It said it would make a new version just for India, called Free Fire India. The game was supposed to be ready on September 5, 2023.

Garena said it talked with government officials before making this plan. It also made some changes to the game:

  • Players could only play for a limited time.
  • There were limits on how much money could be spent in the game.
  • There was an age rule for signing up.
  • Some pictures and looks in the game were changed.

Garena also teamed up with a company called Yotta, which is part of the Hiranandani Group. Yotta would keep the game’s data on computers inside India. Garena even chose famous cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni to be the face of the game in India.

Waiting, Waiting and More Waiting

Then something sad happened. The launch on September 5, 2023 did not take place. Garena said it was putting off the launch by a few weeks. But weeks turned into months, and months turned into years.

In December 2023, the game suddenly vanished from the Google Play Store on December 4. Fans were worried. Later, people learned that Google had removed it because it did not follow the Play Store rules. It was not Garena’s choice. Soon the game’s page came back, but the game still could not be played.

By March 2024, fans were losing patience. A top Sea officer said the company was “still making changes” to the game, based on what Indian players like. But the company did not share much more. Fans felt left in the dark.

Many players got tired of waiting. TechCrunch reported that the game once had more than 40 million players in India. Many of them moved to another game called BGMI, made by a company named Krafton.

The hints never stopped. In October 2025, news reports said that people could sign up early for the game on the Play Store. Still, the game did not come out. Once again, fans had to wait.

What Is New This Time?

This time, Garena says it wants to keep players safe and help them play in a healthy way. Here are the new rules:

  • Players under 18 need permission from a parent or guardian.
  • Players will get reminders to take breaks.
  • There will be a limit on how long a person can play.
  • There will be a limit on how much money can be spent.

Garena also says it listened to advice from people in the Indian government. It added stronger ways to protect players’ data, and the game will now run on computers inside India.

Vaibhav Das Mundhra, who leads Garena’s work in India, said the company wants to give players a game they already know and enjoy, but made with India in mind. He also thanked the players, game creators and esports stars of India for their support.

Tips for Young Fans

If you want to play, here are some safe tips:

  • Ask your parents first, especially if you are under 18.
  • Download the game only from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  • Do not use strange links or files from unknown websites, because they may not be safe.
  • Take breaks often. Games are fun, but your eyes, your sleep and your studies matter too.

Garena has not yet said whether progress and purchases from other Free Fire versions will move to the new game. So fans should wait for official news.

Looking Ahead

The story of Free Fire India has been a long one. There was a ban, a delayed launch, a Play Store scare and years of silence. Now, at last, the wait is nearly over.

For fans, October 28 is a day to look forward to. For Garena, it is a chance to win back the hearts of players who waited a very long time.
