Muzaffarnagar, October 17, 2026: With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections getting closer, western UP’s Muzaffarnagar district is back in focus. It has six Assembly seats, and the results of the last two elections show how fast the mood here can change.

From clean sweep to two seats

In 2017, the BJP won all six seats in the district. By 2022, that number had dropped to two. The SP-RLD alliance won the other four. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, SP’s Harendra Singh Malik defeated BJP’s Sanjeev Balyan, which was another change in the local picture.

There is a new twist for 2027. The RLD fought the 2022 election with the SP. After the results, its chief Jayant Chaudhary joined the NDA and is now a Union minister. This time, the RLD will contest with the NDA.

Seat by seat

Muzaffarnagar Sadar: BJP’s Kapil Dev Aggarwal won in both 2017 and 2022. In 2017, he beat SP’s Gaurav Swarup by around 14,000 votes.

Purkazi: BJP’s Pramod Unthwal won in 2017 by 11,253 votes. In 2022, RLD’s Anil Kumar took the seat with 92,672 votes against Unthwal’s 86,140.

Charthawal: BJP won by about 23,231 votes in 2017. In 2022, SP’s Pankaj Malik won a close contest, getting 97,363 votes against BJP’s Sapna Kashyap’s 92,029.

Budhana: BJP’s Umesh Malik won in 2017 by 13,201 votes. In 2022, RLD’s Rajpal Baliyan polled 1,31,093 votes against Malik’s 1,02,783. His margin of 28,310 votes was the district’s most striking result.

Khatauli: BJP’s Vikram Saini won by 31,374 votes in 2017, one of the party’s biggest wins in the district. He held on in 2022 with 1,00,651 votes, beating RLD’s Rajpal Saini by 16,345.

Miranpur: In 2017, BJP’s Avtar Singh Bhadana won by only 193 votes. In 2022, RLD’s Chandan Chauhan polled 1,07,421 votes against BJP’s Prashant Chaudhary’s 80,041 and won by 27,380.

Why this district matters

Muzaffarnagar is called the “sugar bowl” of western UP because of its sugarcane farming and jaggery market. Farm issues therefore matter a lot in local politics. The 2013 riots also left a deep mark, and religious and caste equations have been part of election talk ever since.

The BJP won the Lok Sabha seat in 2014 and 2019, while the SP took it in 2024. The farmers’ protest against the three farm laws also showed Jat and Muslim farmers standing together. Still, past events alone cannot decide the result of an upcoming election.

A bit of history

The district is named after Nawab Muzaffar Ali. It is also home to Shukratal, an old pilgrimage town linked to the Mahabharata, which draws devotees from across the country.

What to watch

The numbers show that most seats here were won by big margins, but a few were decided by very small ones. With the RLD now on the NDA side, the 2027 fight in Muzaffarnagar will not look like 2022. Parties will be working hard on every one of the six seats.
