KANPUR — A government doctor in Kanpur allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself with his licensed gun inside his home after an altercation with his wife late Sunday night, police officials confirmed. The deceased has been identified as Dr. Sandeep Singh, a state medical officer living in Saket Nagar with his wife, Dr. Kanchan Singh, who is also a government doctor.
Midnight Altercation and Hospital Rush
According to police and family accounts, an argument broke out between the couple late on Sunday night. Shortly after the dispute, Dr. Sandeep Singh allegedly shot himself using his licensed revolver.
Hearing the gunshot, Dr. Kanchan Singh rushed to his aid and immediately transported him to Regency Hospital in Kanpur. However, attending physicians declared him dead on arrival.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dipen Nath Choudhary confirmed that initial findings point to suicide. Police units inspected the apartment, secured the licensed firearm for ballistic verification, and sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
“Prima facie, the case appears to be one of suicide using a licensed weapon. The firearm has been seized and sealed. While no formal police complaint has been lodged by the family so far, further legal proceedings will depend on the autopsy report and ongoing investigation,” DCP Choudhary said.
An Elderly Father’s Lost Three Sons Lost in Succession
The tragedy has left Dr. Singh’s 70-year-old father, Raj Bahadur Singh, in deep sadness. A resident of Pardevanpur in Chakeri, the elderly father has now buried three of his four sons over the span of a few years:
- Vishal Singh: The eldest brother, who died earlier due to a prolonged medical illness.
- Rahul Singh: The youngest brother, who died in a fatal road accident.
- Dr. Sandeep Singh: The third son, whose sudden suicide leaves only one surviving sibling, Vikram Singh, who lives with and cares for their father.
Relatives noted that Sandeep had been a pillar of hope and pride for his father. After clearing the state medical service examinations, he completed postings at Kanpur Medical College and subsequently served in Kanpur Dehat.
Family members shared that just moments before the incident, Dr. Singh had prayed and bowed before a household idol of Laddu Gopal in their apartment.
Background Investigation
Dr. Singh’s cousin, Satyendra Singh, stated that the couple had experienced marital friction in the past, though the specific trigger behind Sunday’s fatal argument remains unknown.
Both Sandeep and Kanchan were in their second marriage. Sandeep had separated from his first wife, with whom he shares an older son, before entering into a love marriage with Kanchan a few years later. The couple has two young children together.
Investigators are currently recording statements from family members and domestic staff to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
