Review, interview or news report? Know what you are reading

Culture coverage can inform, interpret and entertain. Its format tells you what kind of claim the writer is making.

Recognise the purpose of the piece

A review offers an assessment of a film, show, book or performance. An interview presents a person’s account, usually shaped by questions and editing. A news report focuses on verifiable developments. These formats can appear beside one another, so read the label before treating a critic’s opinion as a reported fact.

Treat promotional material as a starting point

Trailers, press notes and launch interviews can help explain what a work is about, but they are produced in a promotional context. Look for independent reporting when a claim concerns audience figures, commercial results or a controversy. A scheduled release is also different from a confirmed availability date in your region.

Enjoy disagreement without losing the evidence

Two critics can reasonably respond differently to the same work. Their arguments may be more useful than the score at the end. Notice which parts of the assessment are grounded in the performance and which reflect personal taste. When a story involves a real person, distinguish an allegation, a response and an established fact. Popularity, a viral clip or a strong reaction does not settle what happened.
